Title: Necessary Defensive Force.
Many believe that it is morally wrong to use defensive force against others when doing so is, in some sense, unnecessary. Although this necessity condition on the permissible use of defensive force is widely accepted, the condition remains poorly understood. I canvass existing formulations of the necessity condition and argue that they all face serious problems. I propose a new account of the necessity condition, one grounded in the more general right to be rescued when others can do so at reasonable cost. I explore some of the implications and advantages of this account.
