General Education Requirements: PPEL & Philosophy

Philosophy and PPEL majors who need help with General education requirements, math, composition and second language requirements should email or make an appointment with the SBS College Advisor for philosophy, Sarah Williams. More info on these requirements can also be found in your General Catalog.

Composition - complete one of the following:

    • ENGL 101, ENGL 102
    • ENGL 106, ENGL 107, and ENGL 108
    • AP English Exam, ENGL 109H

Foreign Language Proficiency (4th semester level) - complete one of the following

  • Exam (either Proficiency exam no units or the CLEP for units) see your academic advisor for more details
  • Foreign language courses*

Math - complete one 3 unit course from the following:

  • PHIL 110*
  • MATH 107 - MATH 485*
  • LING 123 or 178*

Tier 1 - complete all of the following:

  • 2 different courses from the 150 series (TRAD)
  • 2 different courses from the 160 series (INDV)
  • 2 different courses from the 170 series (NATS)

Tier 2 - complete all of the following:

  • Arts (3 units)*
  • Humanities (1 course)
  • Natural Sciences (1 course)
  • *Up to 6 units from Tier-2 Gen Ed courses can be used to also satisfy minor requirements.

Diversity Emphasis - Gender, Race, Class, Ethnicity, Non-Western Area Studies

  • 1 course (may be satisfied by a course simultaneously satisfying another general education requirement)
