Yes, Even Racism
When
As this colloquium event is also part of the broader Conference on Academic Freedom, this talk will not be in the usual location, but rather in the venue for the conference: the Kachina Lounge at the Student Union Building (third floor), 3-5p.
Title: Yes, Even Racism
Abstract: What are the proper limits of free speech in academia? Many people insist that, at the very least, racist speech and research should be banned. In this talk, I argue the opposite: even racism should be tolerated—not because racism is good or might be true, but because no one can be trusted to decide what counts as “racist” and therefore prohibited. Students, administrators, and faculty already abuse the authority and resources they have, and we should expect them to abuse any greater power to police ideas.
Virtual attendance for this talk is available on YouTube. Please email Rishi with any questions about the event, or about the Freedom Center's broader conference. (The conference will include six additional talks on Saturday, including one by our department's own Steve Wall.)
